BLACKTOWN READING ADVISORY GROUP

ABOUT BRAG
B.R.A.G stands for
the Blacktown Reading Advisory Group. We are a group of students
(Year 7, 8, 9 and 11) who meet at DEAR (Drop Everything And Read)
and read current books and give advice to the School's Library and
to the English Faculty about what books to purchase. We are
passionate about reading.
WHAT WE HAVE DONE?
So far we have given advice
as to plays we should be reading in the Year 11 Standard English
course and due to our advice the English Faculty has purchased some
brand new plays which Year 11 are currently reading. We have also
given advice as to some set novels we would like to read as a class
set in Year 7 and Year 8. The novel ‘Once’ by Morris Gleitzman is
being purchased for Year 8 to read. Another novel we highly
recommend to read in your spare time would be the Twilight series by
Stephenie Meyer. This novel is available in the library if you would
like to read it.

WHY DO WE DO THIS?
Now if you are wondering why
we do this it is because we want to have a say about what we would
like to be reading in our English classes. We are also sharing some
of our views with the library staff so that we have copies of some
of these books in the library for everyone to read. We try to make a
difference so that everyone can benefit from this!

TWILIGHT
by
Stephenie Meyer
Twilight is the first book in a series by Stephenie Meyer. The
series tells the story of a young teen called Isabella Swan whose life is all mixed up, with her
starting a new school and life in a small, lonely and cold town.
Along her path of trying to have a good relationship with her father
she meets a mesmerising and mysterious boy at school… EDWARD CULLEN
- smart, handsome, charming and with unbelievably gorgeous golden
eyes. But there is a dark secret behind the Cullen family that will
put Bella, and the people she cares about, at risk. She is
determined to know Edward’s secret and this quest for her to find
out she embarks on a roller-coaster-thrill-ride - from the highs of
new love to the lows caused by tension with her father and friends
who will do anything to stop her.
Twilight
is a great book for people who love romance books with a twist. The
way that Stephenie Meyer writes makes you empathise with the
emotions of the characters. After reading the book it feels like you
have a strong connection with the main characters. Stephenie
describes Edward in a mysterious way, leaving the character open to
interpretation and allowing the reader to judge Edward the way they
want to. By the end of the book you fall in love with the Cullen
family. This book is a best seller and now available in the
library!!

Destroying Avalon
by Kate McCaffrey
Destroying Avalon
is about Avalon, a country girl who moves to the city with her
parents for financial and educational opportunities. However her
life changes dramatically when she is targeted by her peers at
school and becomes the victim of cyber bullying. Things get out of
control… How does Avalon cope? Will the cyber bullies be caught?
Destroying Avalon
is a great book but a sad one. People should read this book because
cyber bullying is a current issue that many teens face. It was an
awesome read!

ANOTHER BRAG
BOOK REVIEW:
Down the Rabbit
Hole by Peter Abrahams
Thrilling, mysterious and
suspenseful. Down the Rabbit Hole is about 13 year old
Ingrid. She loves Soccer and Sherlock Holmes and is trying out for
the lead role in Alice in Wonderland. Ingrid meets a girl people
call ‘cracked up Katie’. Katie is murdered and Ingrid must find out
who is responsible.
This book has some real
twists. The author cleverly combines the everyday expectations of
teenagers with the job of solving a murder. Once you start reading
this book you can’t stop until you’ve finished. This is a great
novel and a MUST read.
